Why are podcasts f***ing awesome?
They just are. Duh.
Just kidding, that was a terrible explanation. Let me try that again.
Podcasts. First off, what are podcasts?
- a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.
The above is a very bland and very basic, dare I say vanilla, explanation of what a podcast is. But to me, a podcast can be so much more. It can be educational, an adventure, and so thought provoking.
I love to read, but podcasts are great when you can’t necessarily divert your eyes to a page. A couple of examples for when audio podcasts are great:
For me, books provide an escape; books can help me to imagine and build a completely new world and dive deep into somebody else’s story; a wondrous and impossible story. Which is why podcasts are so different from audio books for me. Podcasts make me feel like I’m learning, about society and about human nature. Podcasts tell information in a way that makes it feel like an audio book…but a real life audiobook. And that’s awesome!
You can find hundreds of podcasts on any subject you’re interested in, whether it’s finance, arts, science, society, history…there are so many out there! More and more podcasts are being created every day so there is no shortage of things to listen to.
Although podcasts have been around for a long time, I feel that they are on the rise. Podcasts are becoming a more popular form of media, especially within the last election cycle and with broad successes like Serial. In fact, many podcasts are regurgitating the Serial formula, with moderate success! People have a hunger for stories and a hunger for learning so I don’t think podcasts are going to fall off anytime soon. SO JUMP ON THIS BANDWAGON.
A couple of my current favorite podcasts include:
- NPR | Invisibilia (SEASON 3 JUST STARTED. YAAAAASSSSSSS!!!)
- Art of Charm
- NPR | TED Radio Hour
What are your favorite podcasts? Do you have any podcast suggestions? I’m always on the hunt for more podcasts to subscribe to!
